The first thing to note is the difference between residency and citizenship. The Cambridge English Dictionary defines residency as: “The fact of living in a place.” Whereas, they define citizenship as: “The state of being a member of a particular country and having rights because of it.”
In simpler terms, this means that you can be a resident of any country in the world simply by living there for a period of time, but, in order to become a citizen, and therefore gain protection and rights, you need to become a ‘member’ of that country.
